Collaboration in Action: Stories Behind Our Projects
Start date: 2022
Adhered companies: +116
Project Office: Escola Europea
The Technical Office for Port Sustainability – TOPS – was created in 2022, by the Port of Barcelona, to promote and increase sustainability awareness amongst the Port Community.
TOPS is engaged with the + 500 companies that are part of the Port Community, to ensure action is taken to improve the environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance of its different actors.
The office is divided into two distinct groups:
The group launched, back in 2015, an initiative to strengthen the sustainability situation amongst the Port Community. Since then, a yearly sustainability survey has been delivered, evolving the group into a Port Sustainability Observatory. The survey has more than 142 ESG KPIs, all of which are material for our stakeholders.
In 2022 the initiative wanted to take a step further, and was updated to keep up with modern-day challenges, by not only acting as an observatory, but as an enabler of progress. Positive Impact is a project, which provides a long list of voluntary commitments. Companies within the port community may choose one or more of said commitments to work on year after year, and thus, demonstrate progress.
This new approach also takes advantage of the fact that, when it comes to sustainability, all the companies are “rowing” towards a common goal. It creates a space for them to share and highlight activities, changes and/or actions that have been taken and applied in their infrastructures, and which can also be applied and become transversally helpful to other organizations while saving time and money, and thus increasing efficiency within the Port Community of Barcelona.
The group aims to connect companies and the sector’s education organisms to attract talent and adapt schools´ programme offers to the industry’s needs. This is done through events and meetings where the different players of the sector can meet and share knowledge, interests, and expectations.
The group also coordinates different Project Groups, including:
