What is the Escola Europea?
The Escola Europea is a training centre and a reference point for intermodal transport and logistics in Europe, promoting sustainable logistics through innovative courses.
The organisation centres its activities in three principal areas: Research and Innovation, Knowledge and Training.
The Escola Europea began its activities in 2006 as a training centre for European professionals and students of logistics, transport management and international commerce. Years later, the institution gained experience and know-how in areas of international and national project administration, communication, content creation, and development and promotion of logistics modules by collaborating with known international institutions and businesses.
Who are the Escola’s shareholders?
The Escola was founded in 2006 by three ports in the Mediterranean – the Port of Barcelona, the Port of Genoa and the Port of Rome, and two shipping lines – Grimaldi Lines and Grandi Navi Veloci. Since then the Escola has worked with companies from around Europe on European and international projects, but the 5 main shareholders have remained the primary partners. Our Courses
What are the types of courses offered by the Escola Europea?
The Escola Europea organises two types of courses – on board, or on land with different levels. The types of courses depend on the topic of the course. For example, the MOST (Motorways of the Sea Training) courses take place on board of Ro-Pax vessels of our partner companies – Grimaldi Lines or Grandi Navi Veloci, whereas the Summer School on Port Operations takes place on land, with trips to various terminals and companies scheduled between regular classroom activities. Using it’s proven teaching method combining theoretical lectures with experiential practical workshops that take the participants directly to the transport operations studied, the Escola ensures that the participants get the most out of the port community and the partner shipping lines. Who are the courses for?
The Escola organises courses for two kinds of profiles:
- University and vocational students, with programmes focused on (but not limited to) transport operations, international commerce and business
- Professionals either beginning their careers or wishing to enhance their level of knowledge of intermodal transport
What is the training approach adopted by the Escola?
The Escola uses a predominantly experiential approach in its courses, combining theoretical classes given by higher education professors or professional specialists, and practical workshops that take the participants directly to the places where the operations take place. Using this approach, the Escola hopes to make sure that the participants get a 360º understanding of the concepts studied. Most of the Escola’s courses also include a case study that the participants have to solve in groups, putting into practice the theoretical concepts explained and demonstrated.
Who are the teachers?
The Escola’s teachers are members of the port or transport community that carry out the operations that they teach on a daily basis in their companies. It is a central part of the Escola’s approach – to try to bring as much practical experience to the course participants as possible, and the people giving the classes for a central part of that.

How long are the Escola’s courses?
The Escola offers short visits to the Port of Barcelona that can last between 1 hour and half a day (maritime and land visits), as well as courses that last up to 5 days (such as the Summer School). The feature MOST course lasts 4 days, and begins on a Saturday with the vessel’s evening departure from Barcelona towards Civitavecchia.
What are the languages of instruction in the Escola’s courses?
The Escola is proud to have collaborated with experts and specialists from Spain, Italy, Portugal and France. As such, it offers courses in these four languages, as well as courses in English (which is the official language of the Escola). There is the option to request a particular language customisation to one of our course types – contact us if you would like to know more.
What is the minimum or maximum age to register for one of the courses?
There is no maximum age to attend one of the Escola’s courses – although it is recommended for the participants to be still active participants to be able to put the concepts studied into practice once the courses are finished.
Because the courses take place on board of vessels, and take participants to port terminals and international destinations (for example the SURCO Operations II course takes the participants on a day trip to installations in France), a minimum age of 18 is required.
What do I need to attend one of the courses?
All that is needed is enthusiasm and a good attitude towards alternative transport modes. Although for courses that contain international travel, it is recommended that participants take with them identity documents (passports for non-EU citizens, and passports or ID cards for EU citizens), once the registration is confirmed you only need to show up and enjoy the experience.
What are the accepted payment types?
The Escola accepts payments by bank transfer, and by most of the commonly used credit or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc). Payment must be made to confirm the registration.
Where should I make the bank transfer to? Do I need to send a transfer confirmation once I have made the payment?
The bank account details will be made available in the penultimate step of your registration (it is also where you will be able to chose whether you want to pay by bank transfer or by card). If this information is not clearly visible or you have any doubts about the payment you can contact our administration department at: administration@esclaeuropea.eu. Once you have carried out the bank transfer, you can then send a confirmation of said transfer to the administration team to finalise the process.
What is the deadline for the payment of the tuition? What will happen if I don’t pay the tuition on time?
We ask all of our clients to make the payment as soon as possible. The payment should be made one month before the start of the course at the latest. Though we will provide any guidance should there be some issues leading up to that date, if the course is full and there is a waitlist, the place in the course will be forfeit and offered to another.
Is there a minimum period of time to register for the course?
It is possible to register for the course from the moment it is live on the website until one month before its scheduled start.
How do I register for the course?
The links to register can be found on the course pages posted in the calendar section of the website. If you experience any problems accessing the registration forms, please contact us and we will try to solve the technical problem for you.
Do you give discounts to your courses?
Some of the open courses offer an Earlybird discount on the tuition fee (automatically applied at checkout if the registration is made within the timeframe). Moreover, we give special discounts to our alumni, and for 2nd (or more) registration coming from the same company. If you qualify for a discount, contact us before making the tuition payment and we will provide you with a code.
Is there a discount given to the alumni of the Escola?
We are always thrilled to have our past alumni come back and attend more of our courses. We do offer a discount for our alumni – contact us and we will send you the code.

MOST (Motorways of the Sea Training) courses
What documentation should the participants bring with them for the courses?
For the courses that take place on board, it is necessary for the participants to bring with them official ID documentation – for EU citizens, and ID card and for non-EU citizens, passports with European travel authorisations. It is also recommended to bring a EU health card, if you are European, or to have an international medical/travel insurance before embarking on the trip. Moreover, in the aftermath of the COVID-19, special procedures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all participants and on-board passengers. You can find out more here:

What does the signature MOST course contain?
The MOST courses take place on board of Ro-Pax vessels in a short sea shipping crossing between Barcelona and a port in Italy (Genoa or Civitavecchia). During the course, participants will gain a complete view of intermodal operations that use short sea shipping as part of the supply chain. Participants will take part in visits to installations in the Ports of Barcelona and Civitavecchia, and will experience workshops onboard of the vessels, including visits to the command bridge and to the engine room, among others. Does the course include a travel insurance?
The tuition fee of the MOST course does NOT include a travel insurance. The shipping company does have insurance, but it only covers accidents that occur in regular passenger areas (not including visits to the bridge, or the cargo area – workshops carried out as part of the training). The activities that take place outside of the ship are not covered by any insurance. Therefore, it is recommended to bring with you the EU health card (for European citizens) or to have taken out an international medical/travel insurance before traveling.
If you have booked further transits or trips immediately after the end of the course, the Escola and the shipping line is not responsible for any possible delays that may occur and that may affect the transfer to other means of transport. Please keep this in mind before booking your return trip to Barcelona (if applicable).
Do I need to bring something to the course?
The course will take place over 4 days, so it is necessary for you to bring all the necessities that you will need during that time. The course fee includes all necessary course materials and documentation, but it is recommended that you bring your laptop to help you with the preparation of the presentation of the business offer at the end of the course (as part of the case study).
Do I need my own laptop?
It is recommended that you bring your own laptop to the course.
Escola’s Projects
What kind of projects is the Escola involved with?
The Escola started its activities as part of a project that was co-financed by the European Union. Once it has established itself as a centre in the shape and form that it is known today, it began to collaborate with both national and international companies on projects that work towards sustainable and innovative transport in Europe and in neighbouring territories. Is has received grants from the Spanish government as well and worked on projects committed towards the development of transport in Catalonia, together with the Port of Barcelona. The Escola does its projects concurrently with the courses, which form the main area of the company’s activities.
What types of projects is the Escola involved with?
The Escola works with local, national and international companies with the goal towards ensuring sustainable transport solutions and access to education in said solutions to all. Frequently the Escola’s training expertise is used as part of the activities planned for the projects, which could be seen in the MOS4MOS, B2MoS, and the TransLogMed projects, among others. Since the Escola’s established, the team that forms part of the Escola’s team or those that frequently collaborate with the Escola have a lot of information to share with our community.
